It’s not quite the eleventh hour, but we can see the trembling minute hand from here. A fortnight to go and we’ve just crested 18% funding. Faire Play 2 could be doing much better, and Coco haz a sad.

Newest Way To Fail

Wow. Totally didn’t see this one coming.

So I’ve been furiously prototyping models for Kickstarter #2. The keystone model for this next project is what we in the business call a giant-ass bucket of geometry. The gCode works out to something like 90MB (!) of data.

Models like this take forever to print, so rather than try to maintain a USB connection between the computer and the printer it’s generally best to print stuff like this from an SD card. A little interruption like a monitor going to sleep can kill the USB if one isn’t careful, and then you’ve got yourself a half-finished print.

The model started printing at 9AM yesterday after some very careful calibration and painters’ tape finessing, and everything was going great until about 2:30AM today, when I came downstairs to find this:

I’ve never seen this before, so to teh Googles we go. Turns out, at least in the opinion of some electrical engineers, the Replicator1’s Mightyboard generates a lot of electrical interference can cause the bot to fail over long prints.

Live and learn, back to the drawing board, and a host of other try-try-again platitudes must suffice to get me through the day.

The Virtuous Cycle of Fail

This is a failure of an Seej Tournament Bloxen print. Seej is an open source tabletop wargame based around 3D printing.

After a minor success with custom gCode yesterday I started experimenting with altering printing temperatures on the fly.

I tried cooling off the raft a bit and lowering the extrusion temperature; the raft worked great, but the rest of the print didn’t want to stick to the raft anymore.

PLA can be a little fussy, and tends to lose its shape if it’s printed too hot. The next thing I’ll try is feathering off the extrusion temperature layer by layer; hot and sticky at the raft layer, and then successively cooler until I get to a minimum print temperature.

Filament gets gummed up in the extruder at 170° C.

Experimenting leads to failure. Failure leads to knowledge. Knowledge leads to experimenting.

And here’s a Seej Ourobouros Guardian fail. Plenty of tries on this one before I got something that printed correctly.

Otherwise, I’m sticking with the Replicator defaults from ReplicatorG.

I’ve been having a lot of trouble getting black ABS to stick to the platform. The raft came loose about 85% of the way through the print, which is quite frustrating.
